JKA England All Grades Course - BathAll Grades Course – Bath University – 21st March 2010
Emphasis on correct hip rotation and position was the main focus of practice for the first session with Sensei Ohta taking time to demonstrate and explain the importance of the final position of the hips for maximum energy transfer and power. Students paired up practicing different combinations of blocks and punches to further develop their understanding of this. A run-through of the Dan grading basics then gave candidates a further chance to apply what they had just learnt. Second session Sensei concentrated on kicking practice, breaking down each different kick to emphasise the important points: Correct positioning of the hips, knees and supporting foot, and to have a tight ankle for the kicking foot with the leg returning correctly and fully. Kicks were practiced alone then in combinations and with strikes. Students again paired up to perform the kick-strike combinations, defenders sliding back and then stepping to maintain correct distance to block both attacks in one swift movement before countering. Excellent practice for the afternoon’s Kumite! Kata was next on the agenda with Sensei Ohta taking everyone step by step through Heian Godan, explaining and demonstrating the little details that make all the difference. To gain a deeper understanding of the techniques students were paired up to practice some of the Kata’s applications. Finally Sensei gave a really inspiring demonstration of the Kata followed by another demonstration from the whole of the JKAE squad, fantastic! No excuses for not knowing the compulsory Kata now! Third session continued with Kata, students splitting into three groups based on their choice for the coming grading. Sensei Ismail taking students for Bassai-dai, Sensei Tomlin for Jion and Sensei Ohta for Nijushiho. Again the Kata was broken down with finer points and applications being extensively explained and then practiced. A final run through of their choice of Kata was performed by all the students rounded off by an excellent demonstration of Kanku-sho by three members of the squad Kata team. Thanks must go to all the Instructors and Organisers; no one could have failed to benefit from this super course, especially those who were about to attempt their gradings!
