JKA England
SOUTH WEST REGIONAL COURSE
28th November 2009
A well attended course at the IBM Sports Centre in Hursley, with Sensei’s Glyn Morgan (5th Dan) and Roy Tomlin (5th Dan) instructing.
After a warm up, Sensei Roy instructed the Dan grades with Sensei Glyn instructing the Kyu grades. The lessons focused on basics moves concentrating on punches and blocks followed by kicks and corresponding blocks. The emphasis was on accuracy, precision and technique using central vertical straight lines on attacking Jodan (upper level) and Chudan.
The same level of emphasis was placed on kicks such as Mae Geri (front kick), Mawashi Geri (round house kick) and Ushiro Geri (back kick); these were shown in the same vein as the punches. The sensei’s pointed out the sensible approach of delivering the kicks after initiating punches as you are a lot more vulnerable delivering kicks from the offset. One important lesson also focused upon correct distancing as well as the etiquette during kumite for Kyu grades.
After practicing the techniques, students paired up, using speed and power and varying the attacks on the combinations of punches and kicks taught. This progressed to free style sparing.
Next was kata where a number of kata’s was also shown notably, for Dan grades; Jion, Empi and Jitte; for Kyu grades – the Hiean kata’s and Tekki Shodan; Bassai Dai and Jion also This gave students a chance to check stances, techniques and clarify any queries they had on their kata. This was beneficial to those attending who would be grading the following week.
A technical lesson emphasing on the fine attention to detail of not only basic techniques but also kata.
An enjoyable course for all those attending.
Thanks to Malcolm Compton, and Rob Weekes for the course report and also thanks to Malcolm Compton for the organising of his dojo at the I.B.M. for the subsidised course
